Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born into a musical family on the 9th of August, 1963. She was born in Newark New Jersey the daughter of gospel superstar Cissy Houston (nee Emily Lee Drinkard) and John Russell Houston Jr. and cousin of singing star Dionne Warwick. Her mother and she started singing professionally at the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark when Whitney was only 15 years old. The two sang backing vocals in Chaka Khan's track in 1978 Im Every Woman. The singer went on to sing back vocals to Jermaine and Lou Rawls as well as her own mother. She also did a brief stint as a model appearing on the cover of Seventeen magazine in the year 1981. Her first gig was as a lead vocalist with the New York-based funk band Material and it was the high quality of her vocal work together that brought the attention of major record labels, including Arista which she signed with in 1983. However, it was the 1992 film The Bodyguard that solidified her position as one of the world's most well-known artists. The film, and her performance in it was not appreciated, but the soundtrack and her rendition of Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You were charting for months in the charts, and she sold more than 44 million albums and singles worldwide. That same year she married ex-New Edition singer Bobby Brown with whom she was the sole parent of their daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown, born in March 1993. In 1996, her consumption of the drug was well-documented.
